Figure 6: P gingivalis increased MMP-9 activity in the early infection period. After each contact period between the osteoblasts and P gingivalis, culture supernatants were collected from uninfected and infected cultures and used to evaluate gelatinase activity by zymography. CTRL corresponds to basal activity in the noninfected osteoblast cultures. This gel is a representative photograph of four experiments. Changes in the protease activity were measured using the public domain NIH Image software package. P gingivalis-infected cultures and noninfected cultures (CTRL) were compared. CTRL represents 100% protease activation and was used to determine the relative activity levels of MMP-9. Histograms are mean ± SD of three separate experiments |
