Figure 2: P gingivalis-modulated IL-6 mRNA expression. Osteoblast cultures were either not infected or infected with live or heat-inactivated P gingivalis (107 bacteria), following which total RNA was extracted from the osteoblasts and RT-PCRs were performed using specifi c primers for IL-6 and GAPDH. Changes in mRNA levels were measured using the public domain NIH Image software package. P gingivalis-infected cultures and noninfected cultures (CTRL) were compared. CTRL represents 100% gene activation and was used to determine the relative expression levels of IL-6 mRNA. Photos are of representative gels of three separate experiments.
