Free, informative and clinically helpful online portal for both the busy clinician and active researcher.
In addition to the disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is an increase in information now available to the dental professionals and this is projected to escalate every year. Dentistry has had clinically significant advancements in digital dentistry, dental materials, artificial intelligence/machine learning and many other topics. Now more than ever, it is important to stay updated on the recent developments and to cultivate the trait of being a lifelong learner. With cancellations of several major dental conferences or the conversion of in-person programs to virtual events, the pandemic has also greatly impacted the way practicing clinicians obtain new knowledge.
The increase in the number of subscription-based and open-access journals in the last decade has led to an information overload, making it harder for a busy clinician to keep track of advancements and stay updated. To address this need, 8 years ago, Elsevier launched PracticeUpdate (www.practiceupdate.com), a completely free information portal for health care professionals across the globe. In 2020, the American Dental Association (ADA) and Elsevier teamed up to create the free PracticeUpdate Clinical Dentistry (PUCD) channel (https://www.practiceupdate.com/explore/channel/clinical-dentistry/sp23) on the PracticeUpdate portal. There are now 12 medical specialty channels, 10 Centres of Excellence and 2 Disease Spotlights, with Clinical Dentistry, the only dental channel.
PUCD provides clinically relevant content in general dentistry and specialty topics including implant dentistry curated by world-renowned editorial and advisory board members. Expert reviewers provide a summary Take-Home Message (THM), and often an outside expert provides a commentary to help highlight the article's clinical application and relevance.
Once clinicians sign up for the free service and select their areas of interest, they will start to receive daily personalized and curated updates. Our hope is that users will find the completely free PUCD integral to their practice and research interests that will help keep them abreast of the scientific advances.
