Dear Editor,

In dentistry, customization is a primary requirement as patients data are not the same. Therefore, there is a requirement of customization for making patient-specific implants and its associated manufacturing in lesser time and cost. The fourth Industrial revolution is all about digital information translation, and smart manufacturing technologies and is called Industry 4.0. It seemed to have great potential to fulfil this requirement of customization in dentistry efficiently. This revolution is to start by the year 2020, as it includes emerging technologies critical elements like cloud computing, internet of things and cognitive computing. These technologies are the key elements to form smart factories.[1]

The “Third industrial revolution” has helped the dentistry field with innovative applications of x-ray. Now Industry 4.0 creates advance products by the revolution of imaging, cloud-based computing, data manipulation, robots, internet of things (IOT) and additive manufacturing (AM) technologies. These digitized and highly automated processes are integrated with the dental ecosystem to improve the overall health of the patient. By the application of smart manufacturing technologies used in Industry 4.0, the most complicated cases become solvable in lesser time and help are implemented for a customized dental procedure.

Industry 4.0 becomes an automated manufacturing system by providing high-quality dental implants. This revolution provides an integrated network to patient and dentist. It creates values in implants, crown, braces manufacturing and upgrades products for smart health. Industry 4.0 create new business model between dentist, patient and dental laboratory. Dentistry techniques will develop rapidly through modern devices, digitalization and other innovative types of equipment. Computed Tomography (CT) and other methods are used to create digital models of dental implants and manufactured by smart manufacturing technologies.[2]

This industrial revolution improves design capability, manufacturing flexibility and improved performance of dentistry implants. It uses various technologies and devices such as 3D imaging/scanning; optical scans and intraoral scans are used in dentistry to implement the digitalization movement.[3],[4] Different applications of Industry 4.0 in dentistry are as under:

  • Industry 4.0 techniques help to create smart manufacturing ecosystem for dentistry product/implant
  • It enables customization through this innovative way of manufacturing
  • In dentistry, this upcoming revolution will create digitization to help create digital patient records and electronic medical records
  • It creates production capabilities for making customized patient dentistry models, tool and devices to increase patient health
  • This revolution will change the whole current manufacturing system of dentistry implants and other equipment
  • Industry 4.0 introduces 3D printing technologies for a manufacturing process that have already touched different applications in dentistry for the production of implants for everyday operation
  • Industry 4.0 reduces wastages of raw material and lead time
  • Clinician and the dental profession can have good experience of this technological growth
  • It quickly provides practical knowledge through the application of digital dentistry
  • This revolution incorporates computer controlled and digital component for the implant, surgical devices and components


By smart technologies used in this industrial revolution, complex cases are easy to perform, and doctors can undertake precise surgery for the patient and offer an opportunity to solve all crucial problems efficiently. Dentist and surgeon now can better understand and expect improved treatment outcome. It improves communication and provides appropriate information. It manufactures complex shape dental implants with a wide variety of material with necessary strength. Dental surgeons can now convert an idea into reality with the help of improved flexibility provided for designing and manufacturing.[2]

The main limitation of Industry 4.0 in dentistry is the higher capital investment to adapt to the new technologies. Improper implementation of software, machines, material and skilled human resources can lead to commercial failure of the project. There is a need for adequately trained clinicians and diverse team to adopt the new dental technology. There is a decidedly slow adoption rate by the misunderstanding of new technologies.

It will play a useful role in the design and development of dental implants, surgical tools, instruments and devices. These dental implants can comfortably fit for the patient manufactured with the help of smart technologies used in Industry. Techniques and machines used in this revolution also having input flexibility of good quality material that produced quality implants having high accuracy.[5]

In future, dentistry can take full advantage of this upcoming revolution to increase overall performance and bring innovations in this field. It influences smart manufacturing to create more advancement in dentistry. Industry 4.0 will introduce emerging technologies in the dental profession to make it easier, meaningful, enjoyable, better, faster, and flexible. For tomorrow's dentistry, Industry 4.0 seems to be an essential part where different smart technologies, software and process provide customization in lesser time and cost. It has an extensive capability to give instruments and tools as per requirement of the patient.
